Smögenbryggar'n is a series of beers from SMÖGEN ALE AB. The brewery was founded in 2019 and is located on Smögen, Sweden. The brewery is a local initiative and works for a vibrant coastal community and a sustainable marine environment.
They use a 1000 litre brewery and have a capacity of 16,000 litres. There is a separate can facility and the possibility of contract brewing.
The beer is brewed from water from Lilla Dale surface water source, which is considered one of Sweden's best. Some of their malt, oats, and wheat come from local agriculture. They use algae (Carrageenan) to make their beers clearer, instead of chemicals and additives. In addition, they have different kinds of seaweed in all of their beers.
They do not add seaweed to make the beer taste like the sea. It is added as a natural ingredient to give a character in the form of colour and taste such as umami, sweetness, saltiness, and other minerals. The seaweed is grown and delivered by their partner NORDIC SEAFARM. In addition, some are picked locally when the season allows.
Mussel shells are added as a pH adjuster in their Stout, Svarta Malin, to increase the hardness of the water. It is an important factor when brewing this type of beer. The water is from a surface water source with direct contact with Bohuslän granite, which gives soft water.
Leftover malt, so-called draft, and hops from them are used by Hamnbageriet, GRANO, and Skärets Bageri as an ingredient in, for example, bread and by Kustcharken in their beer sausages. Other surplus goes to feed and the rest to their local biogas plant RENA HAV. There it becomes biogas and biofertilizer. The biogas goes back to their local fish processing industries. Biofertilizer goes to the local agriculture that grows barley and wheat, which they use in the brewery.
