In late July 2026, the Aurora International Taste Challenge returned to Stellenbosch for its 8th year. This event isn't just about handing out trophies; it brings together top food experts from around the world to find the very best products on the market. For everyday shoppers, these awards act like a guide, helping people pick out high-quality items they can actually trust.
In a marketplace saturated with noise, an award is no longer just a trophy—it’s a powerful visual shorthand for excellence. Today’s shoppers are suffering from "choice fatigue," and while legacy brands still hold weight, the modern consumer is pivoting toward verified authority. They aren't just looking for names they know; they are looking for the "expert's choice" to validate their purchase.
By weaving prestigious third-party endorsements into the brand’s DNA, from packaging to social feeds, producers do more than just show off; they build an instant bridge of credibility. This independent seal of approval cuts through the marketing fluff, giving brands a definitive edge that turns skeptical browsers into confident buyers. In the battle for the shelf, professional recognition isn't just an honour, it's your most persuasive sales tool.
To make sure the results were fair and accurate, tasting organiser Michelle Grimbeek brought in a team of world-class professionals. The process was intense, using over 3,000 tasting glasses and tasting plates to evaluate every entry. The judges didn't just see if they liked the taste; they looked at everything from the smell and texture to how it looked and the after-taste. Only the products that truly hit the mark earned a spot at the top.
We would like to thank everybody who entered and who was so well-prepared to deliver samples in time, sometimes from the other side of the world. We would specifically like to thank our partners, DHL, and Jet8 for handling the logistics.

What makes this event different is that products are tested the way people actually use them at home. Pre-mixes are prepared, coffee is tried with different milks, and spirits are tasted with various mixers, and the other way around too.
Meats and sausages are cooked the way most people would cook them, using pans, grills, air fryers or stove tops. Halloumi is heated as it would be in a normal kitchen, and drinks, cordials and syrups are mixed with sparkling water, or served with hot or cold milk.
In short, nothing is judged on its own. Everything is tested in real-life situations, just as consumers would experience it.
In 2026, the food and drinks industry is moving faster than ever. Producers are no longer just competing on price; they are racing to keep up with a public that demands plant-based options, carbon-neutral sourcing, and total honesty about what is inside every package. Today’s shoppers use their phones to track an ingredient’s journey from the farm to the shelf, making transparency a requirement rather than a bonus.
Success this year depends on staying flexible. While there are huge opportunities in the health and eco-friendly markets, producers are also dealing with unpredictable supply chains, rising costs, and much stricter environmental laws. It is a tough environment where a sudden shortage or a new regulation can change everything overnight.
To stay ahead, the best companies are building stronger, more direct links with their suppliers and finding smarter ways to source materials. In a world where things feel a bit uncertain, the producers who win are the ones who don't just wait for the next trend to happen, but actively prepare for it by being more resilient and responsive to what people actually want.
The global drinks industry is shifting toward "functional refreshment." It is no longer enough for a drink to just taste good; consumers now expect beverages to work for them by boosting gut health, providing steady energy, or reducing stress. This movement is being led by a few key categories that have moved from niche health trends to mainstream staples.
Kombucha is a standout example of this evolution. While it was once just a quirky health drink, in 2026 it is a sophisticated craft category. Producers have mastered fermentation consistency using advanced starter cultures and "hybrid" vessels that ensure every bottle has the same smooth taste. We’ve also seen the massive rise of "hard kombucha" (4–7% ABV) and "probiotic drinks." These offer a middle ground for people who want a social drink that feels lighter and better for their digestive system than traditional beer or sugary soft drinks.
The juice market has also been reinvented. The focus has moved toward cold-pressed, high-pressure processed (HPP) blends that keep nutrients intact without using heat or preservatives. Today’s juices are often "functional stacks," mixing fruits with powerful ingredients like lion's mane mushrooms for focus, ashwagandha for stress, or turmeric for recovery. There is also a major push for "up cycled" juices, where brands use every part of the fruit to reduce waste and appeal to eco-conscious shoppers.
In the world of alcohol, Ready-to-Drink (RTD) cocktails and hard seltzers are dominating. In 2026, the trend is "premium convenience." People want bar-quality drinks in a can, made with real spirits and natural botanicals rather than artificial flavours. There is also a huge move toward "no-and-low" alcohol options that still look and taste like a high-end cocktail. Whether it’s a canned Espresso Martini or a botanical non-alcoholic spritz, the goal is to provide a sophisticated experience that fits a busy, health-aware lifestyle.
Overall, the most successful brands this year are those that offer transparency and quality. Whether it’s through sustainable packaging or clear ingredient labels, today’s drinkers are choosing products that reflect their personal values of wellness and environmental responsibility.
The biggest single non-alcoholic drink class was the Fruit juice class, followed by Health and Energy drinks, then drinks that had to be prepared, and then soft drinks.

The judging panel was once again blown away by the sheer variety and elevated quality of this year’s entries. Across the board, producers are showing a new level of confidence, moving past safe, traditional recipes to experiment with bold flavours and unexpected ingredients that truly redefined the tasting experience.
The most exciting surprise of 2026 came from the energy and sports drink category. In the past, these drinks were often tolerated for their benefits rather than enjoyed for their taste, frequently coming across as overly sweet or medicinal. This year, that reputation has been completely flipped. The judges found themselves genuinely enjoying these beverages, noting that they now offer sophisticated, refreshing flavour profiles that make them feel like a premium lifestyle choice rather than just a quick energy fix.
By finally bridging the gap between high-performance and great taste, these producers have set a brand-new benchmark for the entire industry.

What stood out most was the bold shift in flavour. Producers are moving way beyond the basic ginger or lemon blends of previous years, introducing complex, high-end ingredients designed to do more than just taste good. We saw a heavy focus on "active" additions that boost the drink’s natural nutritional value, proving that brands are listening to shoppers who want their beverages to work harder for their bodies.
With its naturally low sugar levels and gut-friendly probiotics, kombucha is perfectly positioned for the 2026 market. It has successfully transitioned from a specialised health tonic to a refreshing, everyday alternative that appeals to almost everyone, from fitness enthusiasts to those just looking for a better-for-you soda replacement.

One of the most interesting parts of the tasting was the rise of non-alcoholic drinks. These are no longer treated as simple stand-ins, but as proper drinks in their own right. Many impressed the judges with their balance and depth, often standing up well against alcoholic options. Botanicals, herbs, and gentle natural sweetness were used in a way that felt thoughtful rather than forced, creating drinks that are fresh, layered, and enjoyable. It’s clear there is growing demand for drinks that feel inclusive and mindful, without losing character or taste.
The standout products were the ones that felt well judged and carefully put together. Instead of one strong element taking over, sweetness, acidity, and carbonation worked together in a steady balance. These higher-quality examples felt more like crafted drinks with depth, rather than simple functional beverages.
There was also a lot of appreciation for the drinks designed for mixing at home, such as cordials and syrups. These brought a sense of fun and creativity, with producers exploring unusual flavour pairings and added functional ingredients. They also offered flexibility, letting consumers adjust strength and taste to their own preference. Judges noted how these products added an interactive element to tasting, while still needing precision to ensure consistency when mixed.
Across the board, it was clear that more care is going into how these drinks are made, from ingredient selection to brewing and formulation.

The beer category continues to push creative boundaries, with brewers from across the globe experimenting with innovative techniques and unexpected ingredients. This year’s tasting revealed a wide spectrum of styles, but heavier beers stood out in particular. These entries delivered layered flavours that were both approachable and refined, proving that big beers can still possess complexity, real character and sophistication.
Ciders were equally impressive, reflecting the craft’s remarkable growth and maturity. The judges enjoyed a diverse mix of styles that honoured traditional methods while embracing bold, inventive approaches. Some ciders shone with bright, juicy fruit notes, where natural sweetness was balanced by a precise touch of acidity. Others showcased a drier, crisp profile, with vibrant tartness and a refreshing sharpness that appealed to those seeking a more sophisticated finish.
Year-on-year, the quality of cider seems to leap forward. Far from being a simple alternative to beer, it has firmly established itself as a thoughtfully crafted category, with producers worldwide demonstrating heightened skill, creativity, and attention to detail in every bottle.

The number of wine entries took a great leap forward this year, and the judging panel was genuinely impressed by what they discovered. The bottles on the table covered an incredible variety of styles and regions in one room.
Since this is only the third year that wine has taken centre stage at the event, seeing such a massive turnout is a fantastic sign for the future. It’s clear that the wine community is quickly embracing this challenge, and the diversity of flavours and origins we saw this year, suggests that the competition is only going to get bigger and better from here on out.

The spirits and liqueur line up was a standout, showing off incredible variety from every corner of the globe. Gin, in particular, continues to be a major highlight, but it’s moving in an exciting new direction. While you can still find the classic London Dry styles that people love for their simple elegance, many of this year’s entries took a much bolder approach.
We saw producers moving far beyond the usual juniper base to experiment with an intriguing mix of local herbs, rare spices, and exotic botanicals. These modern gins are all about layers of flavour and pushing the boundaries of what the spirit can be. It is a sign that the industry is becoming more adventurous, blending traditional distilling methods with fresh, creative ideas to keep things interesting for a new generation of drinkers.

In 2026, the coffee and tea industries have shifted from being simple morning rituals to becoming "lifestyle essentials." Producers have moved fast to keep up with a massive demand for functional wellness. This year, it’s common to see coffees boosted with protein, collagen, or mushrooms for focus, alongside teas packed with adaptogens like ashwagandha to help with stress. What were once niche health store items are now mainstream staples, as people look for drinks that offer more than just a caffeine hit.
Sustainability is no longer just a "nice-to-have", in 2026, it is a requirement. Today’s shoppers expect total transparency, often using QR codes on packaging to trace their beans or leaves back to a specific farm. Brands are being held to high standards on everything from regenerative farming practices to carbon-neutral shipping and fully compostable packaging. This focus on "ethical storytelling" has become the primary way for brands to win trust in a very crowded market.
This year’s tea line-up didn’t just show range, it showed intent. Many of the strongest entries were clearly built around a purpose, whether that was helping you switch off, sharpen up, or recover after a long day. It’s a noticeable shift: tea is no longer positioned as a simple pause, but as something more deliberate. The idea of creating a specific state of mind or physical effect has become central, and producers are leaning into that with confidence.
On the technical side, there was a clear step up. The cleanest examples stood out immediately, with precise extraction that delivered depth without dragging in unwanted bitterness. Both hot brews and cold infusions were handled with care, and the difference showed in the cup. The top performers approached their teas almost like chefs, thoughtful sourcing, careful handling, and a focus on getting the most out of each ingredient without overworking it.
Flavour-wise, the spectrum was broad but well controlled. Some teas leaned into deeper, more grounded profiles with a savoury edge, while others lifted things with delicate floral notes or bright, citrus-led finishes. What impressed most was how often these elements were balanced within a single cup, richer, comforting aromas paired with a clean, refreshing lift at the end. That layering added interest without becoming heavy.
Another strong theme was the rise of blends that push beyond the traditional. Classic tea bases were paired with botanicals chosen not just for taste, but for their perceived benefits. These combinations gave many entries a more functional feel, edging closer to wellness tonics while still holding on to the structure of a proper tea. It’s a space that’s clearly growing, and one that’s being explored with increasing skill.

How people prepare their drinks has shifted just as much as what goes into them. What used to feel like specialist equipment is now part of everyday kitchens, with smart brewing systems taking care of timing, temperature, and consistency. The gap between home and café has narrowed, and a well-made latte or carefully extracted tea is no longer something you have to go out for.
At the same time, there’s been a quiet but important shift in expectations. Convenience alone isn’t enough, it has to come with a sense of responsibility. The brands gaining real traction are the ones that make good decisions feel easy, whether that’s through thoughtful sourcing, lower-impact packaging, or simply being transparent about how their products are made.
What stands out is how seamlessly these elements come together. The best performers aren’t shouting about innovation or sustainability; they’ve built it into the experience so naturally that it just feels like part of the product. Quality, consistency, and care are no longer separate selling points, they’re expected as standard.

The 2026 coffee tasting was a masterclass in how much the industry has grown, moving well beyond the usual regions to showcase incredible beans from previously underrepresented farms. Each single-origin entry told a clear story of its local soil and climate, giving the judges a true taste of the world. It was exciting to see producers taking more risks, bringing unique flavours to the table that we simply haven’t seen in previous years.
The roasting styles this year were all about precision. The light roasts were elegant and floral, letting the natural fruitiness of the beans shine through without any bitterness. The medium roasts hit a perfect sweet spot, balancing rich chocolate notes with a smooth, rounded texture that felt very approachable. Even the dark roasts had a modern edge; they were bold and intense with deep hints of toasted nuts and spice, but they never felt burnt or overdone.

We also noticed a big focus on high-altitude coffees, which the judges loved for their bright, crisp energy. The way the beans were processed also made a huge impact. The "natural" processed coffees were incredibly sweet and jammy, while the "washed" versions were clean and sharp. It’s clear that today’s producers are true experts in their craft, using every tool at their disposal to create a coffee experience that is both sophisticated and full of character.
Perhaps most notably, entries expanded significantly beyond traditional brewed coffees this year. A surprising increase in submissions included coffee pods and milk-based coffees, reflecting changing consumer preferences for convenience and versatility. Particularly, the pod category exhibited substantial growth, with quality and flavour complexity rivaling traditionally brewed options, signalling a promising shift towards innovation and accessibility within the global coffee landscape.

In 2026, the olive oil industry is navigating a major "re-balancing" of the global stage. While traditional heavyweights like Spain, Italy, and Greece still lead the market, the landscape has shifted significantly. For the first time, Türkiye and Tunisia have solidified their positions as top-tier global powers, with Türkiye even surpassing Italy in total production during the most recent seasons. This shift is driven by massive investments in modern milling and high-yield groves that are now rivaling the old-world giants.
Consumer demand has also evolved from simply buying "healthy oil" to seeking out premium, functional fats. In 2026, shoppers aren't just using extra virgin olive oil for cooking; they are looking for specific "high-polyphenol" counts and single-origin labels that offer traceable health benefits. We’ve seen a surge in "nutraceutical" olive oils, oils so rich in antioxidants they are marketed more like a wellness supplement than a kitchen staple. This has pushed prices higher, making a professional endorsement or an award more valuable than ever for brands trying to justify a premium price point.
However, the industry is also facing its toughest environmental test yet. Climate volatility, marked by intense heatwaves and unpredictable rainfall, has made harvest volumes incredibly inconsistent. To fight this, 2026 has seen a technological revolution in the groves. Producers are now using AI-driven precision irrigation and drought-resistant olive varieties to stabilise their yields. Sustainability is no longer a marketing buzzword; it’s a survival strategy, with carbon-neutral certifications and water-saving technologies becoming the new standard for any producer wanting to compete on the world stage.

2026 international tasting was a masterclass in how many global producers have refined their craft. The line-up showed an incredible range of what is possible when you match the right variety with the right processing, regardless of where the trees are planted. From high-tech industrial mills to traditional boutique presses, the diversity in flavour and texture this year was a major highlight for the judging panel.
The extra virgin oils were split into two clear camps. On one side, we had "green" oils that tasted like fresh-cut grass and green tomatoes, offering a bright, herbaceous punch. On the other, we saw riper, more golden oils with smooth, buttery notes and hints of almond. The judges were most impressed by the oils that hit that perfect triple-threat: a clean fruitiness, a pleasant bitterness, and a peppery kick at the back of the throat. This balance showed that producers worldwide are getting much better at picking the exact moment to harvest to lock in those healthy antioxidants.

The "sense of place" was also strong this year. You could really taste the difference between oils from cooler, high-altitude groves, which were elegant and silky, and those from the hotter, sun-drenched valleys that produced bold, spicy oils with a long-lasting finish. It proved that soil and climate are the ultimate architects of an oil’s personality, creating a global map of flavour that keeps evolving.
The biggest lesson from this year’s session was that freshness is everything. While the new-season oils were vibrant and full of life, any samples that had been stored too long or handled poorly quickly lost their spark and were sidelined. It was a clear reminder to producers everywhere: in 2026, the best olive oil is the freshest olive oil, no matter which hemisphere it comes from.

The table olive tasting highlighted a sector that has successfully reinvented itself as a premium snacking category. The judges were impressed by the sheer variety on display, noting that producers are moving away from basic brines toward more sophisticated, "chef-ready" profiles. With the global rise of the Mediterranean diet and a massive surge in vegan snacking, table olives have firmly shifted from a simple garnish to a high-protein, antioxidant-rich staple of the modern pantry.
The entries this year showcased a beautiful spectrum of colours and sizes, but the real story was the texture and "snap." The panel noted that the best olives maintained a firm, meaty bite without the saltiness often found in older production methods. This is thanks to new "low-sodium" brining techniques and "fermentation-free" processing that preserve the fruit's natural crunch and vibrant, fresh flavour. While a handful of samples struggled with consistency, the vast majority delivered a clean, authentic taste that felt incredibly fresh.
We also saw a major trend in innovative infusions. Beyond the classic garlic or pimento, this year’s top-tier olives featured bold marinades, think citrus zests, exotic spices, and even botanical herbs, that align with the "clean label" movement. The overall consensus from the judges was that the quality has never been higher; the industry is now delivering a product that is as much about luxury and convenience as it is about traditional craftsmanship.
The judges were overwhelmed with the quality this year, praising the good complexity, balance and harmony of the products evaluated.

The global meat and charcuterie market continues to gain momentum this year, shaped by changing consumer tastes, premiumisation, and a growing focus on sustainability and provenance. Today’s consumers want to know where their food comes from, how it’s produced, and who made it. In response, producers are raising welfare standards, improving traceability, and investing in more sustainable sourcing and packaging. At the premium end, innovation is thriving, with artisanal charcuterie showcasing bold flavour pairings, heritage breeds, and specialised curing and ageing techniques that elevate both quality and character.
Health and lifestyle trends are also reshaping the category. Demand for lower-fat, reduced-sodium, nitrate-free and minimally processed options continues to rise, pushing producers to rethink traditional recipes without compromising on flavour. Advances in natural fermentation, cleaner preservation methods, and controlled ageing are delivering greater depth of taste while improving shelf life. As a result, the meat and charcuterie sector remains one of the most dynamic areas of the global food market—balancing tradition with innovation to meet the expectations of modern consumers.
Charcuterie, cooked and uncooked sausages, patties, bacon and other meat products in a wide variety of styles were tasted, and the quality and diversity were evident.

This year’s cured-meat tasting offered a confident showcase of global craftsmanship, bringing new depth and diversity to the table. The line-up reflected a wide range of regional influences, with each entry expressing a clear sense of place and purpose. From finely matured styles with elegant texture and restraint to more assertive expressions delivering bold, savoury impact, the tasting highlighted how far the category continues to evolve. Together, these entries demonstrated how producers are refining traditional preservation techniques while embracing modern approaches to flavour and consistency.

A standout feature of the tasting was the breadth and quality of artisanal cured sausages, which impressed judges with their precision and complexity. Thoughtful seasoning, controlled fermentation and careful ageing were evident throughout, creating layered flavour profiles that unfold on the palate. Some samples showed finesse and balance, while others leaned into richer, more powerful spice-driven character, finishing long and confidently. Overall, the tasting painted a clear picture of a sector in strong creative form, one that continues to raise the bar year-on-year through innovation, skill and respect for tradition.
This year’s sausage tasting captured a category in full evolution, reflecting the changing expectations of modern consumers and the creativity of today’s producers. The line-up showcased a wide range of global influences, with judges noting a clear move towards bolder flavour design, cleaner recipes and more purposeful ingredient choices. Fresh sausages were particularly prominent, with imaginative combinations of herbs, spices and complementary inclusions bringing new energy to familiar formats, while still respecting classic foundations.

At this year's event, the tasting showcased an exciting new variety of expertly crafted meat products, distinctively different from previous years. Judges sampled succulent chops, chicken cuts, carefully shaped hamburger patties, and tender, slow-cooked specialities, each demonstrating exceptional culinary skill and flavour innovation.
The diversity extended to beautifully seasoned cuts, reflecting global culinary influences and creative approaches to preparation. Overall, the range highlighted the producers’ dedication to meticulous seasoning, precise cooking methods that had to be maintained by the chefs, and ingredient selection, resulting in an impressive array of products that clearly illustrated the evolving creativity and craftsmanship within the meat industry.

This year’s convenience-food tasting highlighted a category that’s rapidly redefining itself, combining ease, quality, and bold flavour innovation. Judges experienced a vibrant mix of ready-to-eat meals, heat-and-serve dishes, and premium snacks, each demonstrating how convenience can coexist with genuine culinary creativity. Producers are now leaning into fresher ingredients, global inspiration, and smarter packaging to deliver products that taste as good as they are practical.
The tasting showcased international influences, from street-food favourites re-imagined for the freezer aisle to gourmet-style meals built for modern lifestyles. Standout entries balanced authentic flavours with nutritional care, while innovative seasoning, textures, and preparation techniques elevated everyday convenience into something more exciting. Overall, the event underlined how the convenience-food sector is evolving, meeting consumer demand for quick, accessible options without ever compromising on taste, quality, or culinary flair.

The global dairy industry continues to evolve rapidly, driven by changing consumer preferences, technological innovation, and growing focus on sustainability. Demand for healthier, ethically produced, and environmentally responsible dairy products is stronger than ever, prompting producers to expand organic, grass-fed, and regenerative-dairy ranges. Consumers now expect full transparency on farming practices, animal welfare, and carbon footprint, reshaping production across key markets worldwide.
Innovation remains a central force. Functional dairy products, featuring probiotics, reduced lactose, high protein, and fortified nutrients, are thriving, while advances in processing and packaging, such as high-pressure pasteurisation, ultra-filtration, and eco-friendly materials, are enhancing shelf-life, quality, and global distribution. At the same time, plant-based alternatives continue to grow, prompting traditional dairy producers to diversify with lactose-free, protein-enriched, and probiotic-enhanced offerings that deliver functional benefits without sacrificing taste.

The result is a highly dynamic industry, where tradition meets modern consumer demands. Companies are constantly innovating to balance nutrition, convenience, and sustainability, reflecting a simultaneously competitive market, creative, and increasingly conscious of its environmental and social impact.
This was the sixth year that dairy products were evaluated. Entrants ranged from very artisanal and small to big producers. The event was open to both dairy products, and non-dairy alternatives.

A great variety of unripened cheeses were entered, ranging from Fior de Latte, Boerenkaas Marscapone to Buratta, Bocconcini and many others. The judges were impressed with the skills exhibited by the producers and the quality of the products. The ripened cheeses also impressed, with the skill of the cheese makers very evident.

There were yoghurt, butter, ice cream, dairy snacks and gelatos to enjoy and savour.
Of all the categories, the dairy category was probably the most competitive, with the highest average quality of all the categories.
Over the past three years, the global condiments and sauces industry has witnessed notable shifts, with the market size reaching an estimated $200.1 billion in 2024 and projected to grow at a compound annual growth rate of 6.2% through 2034. This expansion is driven by a growing appetite for bold flavours, particularly among younger demographics; for instance, 50% of global consumers purchased table or cooking sauces in the past year, with Gen Z and Millennials leading the demand for ethnic and fusion profiles. Demand for spicy and ethnic sauces has surged, with international fusion menu items growing by 12% in 2023, and consumers increasingly exploring flavours like gochujang, harissa, and sriracha.
Health-conscious consumers are also influencing market dynamics, prompting producers to innovate with reduced-sugar, lower-sodium, and natural ingredients. This is reflected in the 10.9% uptick in prices for premium, functional, and "better-for-you" condiments over the last few years. Organic, gluten-free, and vegan sauces have gained significant traction, the US plant-based condiment market alone reached approximately $80 million—appealing to consumers who prioritise wellness.
Sustainability and ethical sourcing have become key trends shaping the industry. Brands are actively promoting transparency, with ethical packaging and "no additives" claims appearing in nearly 10% of all new food and beverage launches. Major players like Unilever and Kraft Heinz are responding to these demands for accountability by reformulating legacy brands for clean-label standards.
Digitalisation and e-commerce growth have significantly changed distribution channels, with the online segment projected to account for over 52% of hot sauce sales by 2025. This shift has allowed small and artisanal producers to enter global markets, while also enabling direct-to-consumer subscription models that boast reorder rates of 35–45%. This has diversified offerings, introducing consumers worldwide to niche and regional sauces, further enriching the global culinary landscape.
The Condiment and Sauce entries varied greatly, with Chilli-based sauces having the highest number of entries per class. The judges were surprised by the producer's focus on depth of flavour, rather than just focusing on heat.

The 2026 condiment tasting event presented an exciting selection, distinctively different from previous years, highlighting a shift toward "micro-regional" authenticity and the integration of functional, health-forward ingredients. While spicy sauces continued to captivate attendees, the event introduced complex fermentation-led heat, such as chilli crunch pastes and "sting-less" peppers that focus on floral notes rather than pure capsicum. From zesty peri-peri blends to subtly spiced, cold-pressed relishes, producers creatively balanced heat with bold aromatics, showcasing a sophisticated mastery of culinary craftsmanship.
The tasting also explored condiments beyond heat, placing greater emphasis on hyper-local specialities and diverse culinary influences that prioritise "clean label" transparency. Standouts included tangy, black-garlic, richly flavoured African sauces, and unique sweet-savoury pairings such as fermented mustard and fruit chutneys. These selections highlighted global cultural expressions and a move toward sustainable, up-cycled ingredients, demonstrating producers' abilities to incorporate heritage techniques and modern innovation effectively to meet the demands of the 2026 consumer.

Overall, the event celebrated the dynamic evolution of condiments, underscoring their essential role in enhancing culinary experiences. Attendees experienced how condiments can elevate dishes, balancing sweetness, acidity, and heat to transform simple foods into memorable and sophisticated meals.

Some individual specialised sauces stood out, while some meat sauces strongly came to the fore.

The tasting revealed an exciting selection of high-quality products, showcasing a sophisticated fusion of regenerative agriculture and modern culinary science. While classic, small-batch recipes evoked nostalgia, modern interpretations introduced "low-intervention" techniques and functional additives, elevating these pantry staples into the realm of wellness-focused luxury.

Judges noted how exceptional craftsmanship and a focus on terroir-specific sourcing transformed simple spreads into standout creations. From delicately balanced, botanical-infused honeys to richly textured, up-cycled fruit syrups and "nut-free" savoury spreads, the tasting highlighted products that exceeded expectations by balancing reduced sugar profiles with intense, natural flavour. These selections proved that the category remains a treasured and evolving part of the culinary world, successfully adapting to the 2026 consumer's demand for both transparency and indulgence.

This year saw a great variety of entries ranging from Stroopwafels, to buns, breads and from Gummies to fudge. The judges had a royal time judging the entries.

This year’s tasting event showcased an impressive variety of spices, with an exciting mix of bold and inventive flavours. Judges were particularly impressed by unique blends that elevated familiar ingredients, bringing depth and complexity to the competition.

Standout entries included masalas, everything spice, rich and smoky blends, and expertly crafted rubs. These selections demonstrated innovation while honouring traditional seasoning techniques, making this year’s spice category one of the most dynamic yet.
This year’s food and drinks tasting delivered an exceptional showcase of global talent, attracting a powerful international response and shining a spotlight on producers at the top of their game. The creativity, commitment and ambition on display were unmistakable, with each entry bringing its own sense of identity and purpose. Behind the scenes, dedicated teams and passionate producers worked tirelessly to make this year’s event a standout success.
The quality of entries reflected an industry in confident forward motion. Producers demonstrated outstanding craftsmanship alongside a willingness to challenge convention, blending trusted techniques with fresh ideas and modern thinking. Across the tasting, products stood out not only for their quality, but for their intent, clear expressions of flavour, provenance and innovation designed to meet today’s evolving consumer expectations.
Looking back on this year’s results, one thing is clear: the food and drink sector is evolving faster and more boldly than ever before. With refined skills, adventurous flavour development and a fearless approach to innovation, producers are redefining what excellence looks like. The result is a vibrant, competitive landscape that continues to raise the bar and shape the future of food and drink.
